But that’s where you can make a mistake. Odds are basically a price tag, and that price can be too high or too low, depending on what you are betting on. A selection at 2.12 has about a 47% chance of winning (1 divided by 2.12). If you put R29 on it, then you’ll get about R61 back, which means you’ll get about R32 in pure profit if you’re lucky. It’s not bad, but you shouldn’t be taking that price unless you’re absolutely confident.
Now look at the odds for a short favourite at 1.44. That comes out to roughly 69%, which sounds amazing, but it can be quite deceiving. The returns aren’t that amazing so a large portion of your stake is doing the heavy lifting. If you have a gut feeling that the game is going to be a messy one, avoid those odds.
